10 Mother’s Day Movies That Totally Celebrate Why We Love (And Hate) Moms

From: Queerty 10 Moonlight Ok, so the crack whore mom at the center of Moonlight isn’t exactly a contender for mother of the year. As played by Naomie Harris , messed up mom Paula becomes the other kind of mom a number of us–queer and straight alike–have come to know: women who desperately love their children, but fall victim to their own personal demons. Paula isn’t a bad woman exactly, but she’s in a very bad place, offering little help to her son Chiron as he struggles with his sexuality and growing up. Hey, moms come in all shapes and sizes, and on Mother’s Day we’d all do well to follow Chiron’s example. Despite her failings, he loves her anyway.

From: Queerty 9   Transamerica Felicity Huffman should have won an Oscar (eat it, Reese Witherspoon!) for her performance as a transgender woman who discovers she has a teenage son. Huffman and her bisexual hustler of a son (super hot Kevin Zegers) then embark on a cross-country journey that reunites Huffman with her eccentric parents, and bittersweet comedy ensues. Huffman gives a powerful, understated performance as a woman learning to be a dad, and Zegers has rarely been better than as a sexually confused teen who just needs a mom.

From: Queerty 8 The Kids are Alright Otherwise known as the movie that taught everyone how much middle-aged lesbians enjoy straight porn, The Kids are Alright features some great performances by Julianne Moore and Annette Benning as a pair of lesbian moms going through a relationship crisis. As their kids sneak about to discover their biological father (Mark Ruffalo), moms Moore and Benning become the prototypical long-married couple: eternally devoted to their kids, and to one another. Few movies revere motherhood in such a unique and interesting way.

From: Queerty 7 Postcards from the Edge Speaking of Debbie Reynolds, her daughter, the late, great queer icon Carrie Fisher, penned the script for this uproarious comedy from director Mike Nichols. Meryl Streep and Shirley MacLaine star as a pair of mother-daughter actresses loosely based on Fisher and Reynolds. The two fight, argue and drive each other nuts, even as they both struggle with the pain of addiction. Streep has never been better (which is saying something), and MacLaine has a show-stopping musical number that must be seen to be believed. That Fisher’s dialogue crackles with the kind of witty zingers that made her famous, only adds to the enjoyment.

From: Queerty 6 Mother Albert Brooks’ quirky comedy might not feature any queer characters, though it does feature a magnificent performance from a queer icon: the late Debbie Reynolds . Critics often cite Mother as a comeback for Reynolds, who went on to become a highly admired character actress after the film. A movie about a neurotic son and his loving—if smothering—mom, Brooks’ writing and direction draw sharp and memorable characters. Reynolds owns the show though, embodying everything we love and hate about mom.

From: Queerty 5 Prayers for Bobby This film raised the bar on the quality of Lifetime made-for-TV movies, owing to a magnificent, Emmy-nominated performance by Sigourney Weaver . Based on a true story (hey, it’s a Lifetime movie after all!), Prayers for Bobby follows the struggle of one woman to first “save” her son after his coming out, and later, her own epiphany after his suicide. Weaver makes her character into a woman to pity and admire all at once, and though predictable, Prayers for Bobby testifies to the power of all parents who stood by their queer kids.

From: Queerty 4 Psycho OK, so this one might be a bit of a stretch, but hey, Mother’s Day celebrates all aspects of motherhood, right? That should include turning your son into a serial killing psychopath! Not that anyone is complaining about Anthony Perkins , or his damn handsome looks… Alfred Hitchcock would also love that men and women view his suspense-thriller masterpiece on Mother’s Day as a sort of twisted love letter to motherhood, or as a way to cleanse the palate between screenings of other, more saccharine film outings. The movie should also make anyone who’s seen it raise an eyebrow the next time some cute gay boy in the club refers to his mom as his “best friend.”

From: Queerty 3 Beautiful Thing Of course, no list on fabulous moms would be complete without mentioning Beautiful Thing . Ostensibly a story about two teenage boys coming out and falling in love, the movie actually belongs to actress Linda Henry, who plays the snoopy-if-loving mom, Sandra. Crude and flawed though she is, Sandra comes to embody the kind of mom every gay kid should have when coming out: one who loves her offspring unconditionally, and one who also how to have a good time with him.

From: Queerty 2 Kill Bill Call it a counter-intuitive entry, but Quentin Tarantino’s two-volume masterpiece about a scorned assassin looking for her daughter makes for some fantastic, if rather ironic, Mother’s Day viewing. Uma Thurman commands the screen as The Bride, alongside divas Vivica Fox, Daryl Hannah and Lucy Liu, staging some incredible action and some very wicked humor. Best of all, underneath the cinematic homages, snappy dialogue and kung fu mayhem, Kill Bill is a story all about motherhood, making The Bride into an unlikely and unique feminist heroine.

From: Queerty Mother’s Day is upon us once again, and so let's pay homage to the women that bore us, and bear with us (and let us raid their closets.) After all, there’s nothing more special than the relationship between mom and her gay son. Of course, not all movie moms embody the picture of love and devotion for their children (looking at you Mommie Dearest ). Moms—and even worse, step moms—have a bad habit of becoming nasty villains. The Manchurian Candidate , Hellraiser , Precious …those moms don’t make us want to send a bouquet of tulips to our own matriarchs. On the other hand, plenty of films celebrate all that’s great about motherhood, even if in an unorthodox way. This Mother’s Day, sit down with mom, or maybe just some fabulous queer friends, and watch one of these screen classics that celebrate motherhood and all the good it brings. Each title features a mom we can relate to, even emulate, at the best—and worst—of times. 1 Snatched The wonderful Amy Schumer and the nat...

FEBRUARY 20, 2015 From: Deep Dish  I helped move my parents out of their home of 45 years, which reunited me with many books and magazines from my childhood. So I thought it would be fun to share some of these groovy items with you. In honor of the 87th Academy Awards, I'm featuring one of my favorite things about Playboy magazine - its annual "Sex in Cinema" article. My father kept a large collection of such magazines in our attic, which I - as a teenager - would look at whenever my parents went out for the evening. I was never much interested in the naked ladies, but I did enjoy any article about movies or television. So here is a pictorial overview of "Sex in Cinema - 1976" , which was featured in the November 1976 issue of Playboy :

From: Queerty 2.  Russell Todd   Friday the 13th Part II With his leading-man good looks, you fully expect Russell Todd to be the last man standing in Friday the 13th Part II . That’s why it’s so thrilling when the machete slips delicately across his throat, and then the rush of spilling blood…

From: Queerty 3.  Robert Rusler   A Nightmare On Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge  1985 The second Nightmare is still the best because of its overt (and deliberate) gay subtext. While we certain enjoy the coach’s sadomasochist slice-up, Ron’s flamboyant murder involves him getting skewered in a pair of slinky running shorts (Also, mom doesn’t seem overly worried; more like she wants to get back to Newhart .) Here are all the deaths in Nightmare 2. (Ron’s scene starts at 2:03):

From: Queerty So rugged. So handsome. Such a pity they had to die. Those firm, muscular bodies desecrated and torn asunder… The panic coursing from their eyes as they bleed out, staring sightlessly. The inhumanity of it… To celebrate all things eldritch and awful, here are five scenes from an assortment of schlocky horror films that hover lovingly over flayed man flesh. Let’s watch these handsome, well-intentioned men get their guts handed to them as they’re painted over in their own blood. Because that’s life. That’s reality. And this is Halloween weekend, bitch. Let’s take a look. Shall we, kiddies? 5.  Paul Satterfield  Creepshow 2  1987 The followup to the far-superior Creepshow anthology film is memorable mainly for Paul Satterfield spending the entire “The Raft” installment in a yellow bikini before being tortured and killed by a lumpen lake creature. Antigay Priests Who Lust For Men Revealed In Secret Webcam Sessions

From: Queerty According to the trailer for a documentary called Amores Santos , or Sacred Love , a certain set of holy men are lifting their frocks and showing off their scepters to other men online. In the film, it appears that one gay man films his encounters with a priest (or priests?) from the antigay Assembly of God Church, who utters fatherly phrases to his online boyfriend like: “I’ve been thinking a lot about us. It’s too strong. I’ve never felt like this before.” And: “The Church has hypocrisies within itself. 90 percent of all priests are gay.” Watch the trailer below:

The Hidden Homosexual History Of “Ben-Hur”

صورة
Does the new remake keep the gay subtext? From: NewNowNext  It’s Hollywood legend that the 1959 version of Ben-Hur —that went onto win a record 11 Oscars—had a gay romance that many audience members never picked up on.  The hidden gay relationship between the two main characters was brought to light in the 1995 documentary The Celluloid Closet when Gore Vidal revealed that he was brought on the film as a script doctor and rewrote scenes to “hint heavily at a prior sexual relationship between Charlton Heston’s title character and his childhood friend (and later betrayer) Messala (Stephen Boyd),” reports The Guardian .  After Vidal’s comments the film’s star Charlton Heston wrote to the Los Angeles Times blasting him for tarnishing a Hollywood classic with homosexuality—but Heston didn’t know about the relationship between Ben-Hur and Messala because no one told him before the shoot. Vidal did confirm that “he had discussed the matter with Boyd, who duly followed the screenwriter’s lea...
