A Wolfson in Sheep's Clothing

صورة
SEPTEMBER 06, 2005 From: kenneth in the (212) Tracy Wolfson 's post-match interview with Lleyton Hewitt on Sunday at the U.S. Open was truly unreal. I'm not sure how this pint-size reporter got her job, but it's pretty sad that CBS would have such a knowledgeable group working in the booth (you can't beat John McEnroe and Mary Carillo) yet still hire people who know nothing about the game of tennis to actually interact with the players. I'm not a big fan of the oft-grumpy Hewitt, but he really did handle himself quite nicely given the fact that he had just finished an exhausting five-set match — and Wolfson was completely out of line. My co-worker and friend Lynn always had this theory that Hewitt must not be such a bad guy because even when he had his setback year in 2003, he would always continue to stay at the Grand Slam events to watch his then-fiance Kim Clijsters play her matches. (Something we all know Jimmy Connors would have never done for Chris Evert back...

Former Corbin Fisher Model Turned CNN Producer Matt Null Dies In Barcelona

صورة
From: Queerty Former Corbin Fisher model turned CNN producer Matt Null died earlier this week while on vacation in Barcelona. According to Str8UpGayPorn , Null got his start in adult entertainment 12 years ago, appearing in scenes as “Austin” on Corbin Fisher from 2004-2005. He later went on to work as a producer for “On the Record With Greta Van Susteren” at Fox News before becoming a senior producer at CNN. Null had been working for the network’s morning show, “Early Start,” for the past three years. On Wednesday, the show’s anchor, Christine Romans, shared the news with viewers. “It is with a heavy heart that we report tragic news of one of our own this morning,” a teary-eyed Romans said. “A cause of death has not been revealed.” “He is literally the voice in our head every morning. When terrible things happen around the world, he is the one who brings it to you with calm and fairness,” she added. “He is someone who really made a difference in the world through his job.” She left o...

IOC calls Olympic Grindr sex article 'unacceptable,' says Daily Beast sent Nico Hines home

صورة
It's the organization's first statement since writer posed as gay for story on sex at the Olympics. From: OutSports Photographers at the Rio Olympics Pascal Le Segretain/Getty Images The International Olympic Committee has condemned as "simply unacceptable" a since-deleted story on the Daily Beas t where a straight reporter posed as gay on Grindr to do a feature on sex at the Olympics. The IOC indicated in an email to Outsports that the writer, Nico Hines , is no longer in Rio. "We understand the organization concerned recalled the journalist after complaints and withdrew the story," an IOC spokesperson told Outsports,  Sunday in an email statement. "This kind of reporting is simply unacceptable." It's the IOC's first response since the controversy broke on Thursday. It could not be immediately confirmed if Hines is still in Rio. However, his last story on the Daily Beast 's website was Aug. 9, two days before his story about Olympi...

Gay athlete to Nico Hines and the Daily Beast: You are the people we fear

صورة
From: OutSports To whom it may concern, This letter is addressed to Nico Hines, who I genuinely hope may read it and understand a perspective that differs from his own. It should be noted that I do not write this in anger, but in disappointment and in sadness at the state of mind that emboldened you to craft such a piece. I decline to comment on specifics of the article itself, as the nuances of journalism are outside my field of expertise, and really there is really nothing I can say that has not already been said by others. But I would like to share some of my life with you in the hopes that you can understand the motivations behind the response you've received. First, you should know I am a former athlete, and I am gay, a combination which, as you have discovered, is not uncommon. I deeply love the Olympics and I love what they stand for. I am enamored of the idea that men and women can put aside all differences for two weeks and compete, purely for the appreciation of sport. It...

Commentator Who Couldn’t Handle Gay Kisses ALSO Slams Tennis Player As ‘Not Macho’

صورة
From: Queerty So far, the Olympics have mostly been super fun — but at times, they’ve exposed how much times have changed in the last few years, and how poorly sports reporters have kept up with them. You’ve probably seen some of the sexist and racist coverage that’s come out of the event — one medal-winner was only identified by her husband’s name, another was referred to only by her race in a headline. And now, a BBC commentator is being called out for a borderline-homophobic, machismo-dripping comment on a tennis match. British player Andy Murray cried when he won a victory over an Argentinian player last night. BBC commentator Paul Hand couldn’t bear the sight of it. “We’ve had macho tennis, but not a macho response, right?” he said. Oh, lord. Can you imagine being as delicate and hysterical as Paul Hand? If the sight of another man crying makes him nervous, he must truly be dealing with some troubling personal issues. His comments touched off a firestorm of complaints on Twitter,...

IOC Condemns Daily Beast’s Olympic Grindr Article, Says Writer Sent Home

صورة
A spokesman for the Olympics says Nico Hines is no longer in Rio. From: NewNowNext  The International Olympic Committee condemned the Daily Beast article baiting gay athletes as “simply unacceptable” and indicated the writer, Nico Hines , is no longer in Rio. “We understand the organization concerned recalled the journalist after complaints and withdrew the story,” an IOC spokesperson told Outsports .  In his post, Hines used Grindr and Jack’d to connect with gay Olympians, even though he is a married heterosexual. “The concept for the piece was to see how dating and hook-up apps were being used in Rio by athletes,” wrote DB editor in chief John Avlon in an editor’s note added later. “It just so happened that Nico had many more responses on Grindr than apps that cater mostly to straight people, and so he wrote about that.” But, as many pointed out, Hines included specific information that could identify the athletes he communicated with, including some from countries that outlaw hom...

Petition Hopes to Revoke IOC Press Credentials from Nico Hines and The Daily Beast

صورة
From: Towleroad A change.org petition is calling for reporter Nico Hines and The Daily Beast to have their press credentials for covering the Rio Olympics revoked following a report filed by Hines for the Beast in which Hines effectively outed gay Olympians from anti-gay countries The petition says that The Daily Beast is “not a legitimate news organization and does not deserve to be treated as such.” As of this posting, the petition has 7,673 signatures, needing 2,327 more to reach its goal. Petition creator Josh Price writes, “Nico Hines and The Daily Beast showed a severe lack of judgement when they decided it would be funny to gawk and laugh at gay people on dating apps. The result of their lack of concern for gay peoples [sic] lives put gay Olympians in very real and serious danger by outing them. The Daily Beast doubled down on their article and insisted they were not in the wrong. Eventually, The Daily Beast offered a non apology, until it was finally forced to offer a...

IOC must revoke Nico Hines, Daily Beast, Olympics credentials immediately

صورة
From: OutSports Prior to last Friday's opening ceremonies for the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach said this at a dinner. "Your presence is another demonstration of how the Olympic Games go beyond the sport," Bach said. "Your presence shows that the sport is in the middle of a diverse and modern society. Like the athletes, we have come together from different parts of the world to celebrate our diversity. Thank you for coming and for sharing with us this Olympic spirit of peace and solidarity." Peace and solidarity. Athletes from around the world come to compete on the world's stage knowing that they are in a safe environment, to celebrate their achievement, and not be shamed. Nico Hines of The Daily Beast , a reporter given credentials to cover the games and have access to the athlete's village, violated this safe environment for many athletes with a recent story, that has since been...

Straight Journalist Downloads Grindr, Baits Closeted Athletes In Rio

صورة
The Daily Beast's Nico Hines is accused of baiting Olympians and potentially outing them. From: NewNowNext   The Daily Beast ’s Nico Hines is facing heavy criticism today after penning an article that threatened to out a number of closeted gay athletes competing in Rio. Noting reports of increased sexual activity and even sex parties in the Olympic village, Hines described downloading Grindr to lure gay Olympians under the promise of having sex, so that he could “report” on their Grindr usage. But the post “potentially identified closeted athletes—including at least one from a country where gay sex is a crime,” according to Pink News . Hines claims he “didn’t lie” to anyone he’d talked to, though he withheld the fact that he is straight and married with a child. Calling the piece a ” dangerous disaster” and “wildly unethical train wreck,” Slate ’s Mark Joseph Stern outlined the potentially violent repercussions of Hines’ actions. Wrote Stern: The offensive purpose of Hines’ arti...
