New IOC regulations mean trans athletes like Balian Buschbaum can compete as their authentic selves. From: NewNowNext  As the book closes on another Summer Games, we’re looking at the stories of LGBT Olympians past and present. Some blazed a trail in both representation and athletic accomplishment, while others had to give up their dreams to live their truth. German track-and-field star Balian Buschbaum competed in the 2000 Games in Sydney as a female pole vaulter—his personal best 4.70 meters, or about 15.42 feet, was a national record for many years and is still among the country’s top scores.  But in 2007, Buschbaum announced he was retiring from the sport, due to a persistent injury and a desire to begin transitioning. In his memoir, Blue Eyes Remain Blue Eyes , Buschbaum revealed the name “Balian” was inspired by Orlando Bloom’s character in the film Kingdom of Heaven . Apparently it was a very tight match. From: NewNowNext  Language is a funny thing: What might be innocuous in one language can be absolutely scandalous in another. That became apparent this week in Rio, where Germany took on Canada in Olympics men’s field hockey. Embed from Getty Images While Canada lost 6-2, it was a photo of two German players standing side-by-side that broke the Internet (or at least sent it into juvenile giggles). A savvy viewer took a screenshot of Linus Butt and Florian Fuchs standing next to each other with their names emblazoned on the back of their jerseys.

Olympics: Men's Team Table Tennis with Germany's Dimitrij Ovtcharov

From: Speed o Rex The Olympics Men's Team Table Tennis playoff began Friday.  In the Singles Men's Tournament, Ma Long of China took the Gold Medal, Zhang Jike of China took Silver, Jin Mizutani of Japan took Bronze, with Vladimir Samsonov of Belarus in fourth place.  In the team tournament 16 teams square off against each other, with the Chinese medal winners anchoring their country's team, and Mizutani on the Japan team.  There is no Belarus team in the competition, but they have a solid cornerstone for future development.   Featured is Ukrainian born Dimitrij Ovtcharov , who plays for the German national team.  His team squares off today against Taiwan.  Follow Ping Pong updates here

Moritz Bleibtreu From: Favorite Hunks & Other Things  Beautiful Moritz Bleibtreu was born in Munich and got his start in television in the late 70's. Moritz has been working steadily in movies and television since, and was seen in Speed Racer  as Grey Ghost. Moritz turns 45 today.
