More Than A Third Of LGBTI Athletes Won Medals In Rio

صورة
That's more than Team USA From: NewNowNext  35 percent of the record-breaking 53 out athletes competing in the 2016 Rio Olympics took home medals, either solo or in a group. This in comparison to leading Olympic contenders the United States, Great Britain and China, who saw roughly 20 percent of their athletes take home medals. If all the openly LGBTI athletes were consolidated onto one team, their five gold medals, six silver medals and three bronze medals would have placed them in 16th overall, ahead of countries like New Zealand, Canada and Kenya. Though the 2016 Games were not without their controversy, including journalists outing athletes and fans shouting homophobic chants at players, they also saw empowering coming out moments, joyful proclamations of same-sex love and plenty of proudly out athletes taking to the Olympic podiums. Here’s hoping the 2020 Games in Tokyo will be even gayer!   Gold Medals: Nicola Adams   Great Britain Boxing  51kg weight class   Kate Richardson-...

J.K. Rowling defends gay Olympic diver Tom Daley from Christian Twitter troll

The "Harry Potter" author won't accept homophobia. From: OutSports "Harry Potter" author J.K. Rowling defended gay British Olympic diver Tom Daley when a Christian advocacy group mocked him for failing to make the finals in the 10-meter platform in Rio. The Christian Voice, which says it is a "prayer and lobby group praying for national repentance and working for godly government," sent out this hateful tweet after Daley failed to make it out of the semifinals on Saturday: Turning gay doesn't seem to have done Tom Daley any favours at #Rio2016 https://t.co/tdbT0Y5acx — Christian Voice (@UKCV) August 20, 2016 This prompted Rowling to step in: Can't decide which is more offensive in this tweet, the stupidity or the spite. https://t.co/ksqZp17drc — J.K. Rowling (@jk_rowling) August 20, 2016 I had seen the Christian Voice tweet shortly after it was posted but was not going to give it any credence since the group has a whopping 650 Twitter follower...

47% of out LGBT athletes won an Olympic medal in Rio

صورة
Of the 53 publicly out LGBT athletes, 25 of them won a medal including 10 gold. From: OutSports Britney Griner and Elena Della Donne won gold for Team USA women's basketball. Jeff Swinger-USA TODAY Sports Almost half of the publicly out LGBT athletes competing in the Rio Olympics won a medal, which is a drastically higher percentage than the athletes in general. All told, 25 of the 53 publicly out athletes, a full 47% -- won a medal, including 10 athletes winning gold. In 2012, about 40% of the publicly out LGBT athletes won medals, as Team LGBT did very well for itself at the Summer Olympics in London. This number is even higher, thanks in part to the success of the Swedish women's soccer team and the American women's basketball team, which combined account for almost a third of the athletes winning medals. It is odd that being publicly out would translate to Olympic success in two straight Summer Games. You have wonder if there is a correlation. Gold Medals Nicola Adams G...

Tom Daley finishes last in semifinals day after finishing first, is out of 10-meter competition

Tom Daley, just a day after posting a massive score in the preliminary round, flames out in the semifinal. The openly gay British diver is already looking ahead to the Tokyo Olympics. From: OutSports Tom Daley is out of the men's 10-meter platform competition at the Olympics. After finishing first in the preliminary round with an incredible score of 571.85 on Friday, the openly gay diver scored an abysmal 403.25 in the semifinal, leaving him dead last of 18 divers. Only the top 12 advance to the final later. His performance will leave many wondering, "What the hell happened?" To put it in other terms, this is like the Green Bay Packers putting up 48 points on the Bears one week, then scoring only a couple field goals the following Sunday against the Vikings. It doesn't happen without something going terribly wrong. Of all 18 divers the entire day, only four dives failed to score a 55.00. Daley performed three of those four dives. He needed a score of over 100 on his f...

Tom Daley finishes first in 10-meter diving prelims

Tom Daley won the 10-meter diving preliminary round in the Rio Olympics. He moved on to the semifinals and finals looking for a gold. From : OutSports Tom Daley , the British diver who so many remember as a 14-year-old in Beijing but who has steadily risen up the ranks in the diving world, finished the preliminary round of the men's 10-meter platform in first place. Daley, who is openly gay, beat out some of the favorites, including Chinese divers Qiu Bo and Chen Aisen, as well as American diver David Boudia, who won Olympic gold in this event four years ago. The semifinals of the 10-meter platform were Saturday morning, with the final Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately for Daley, his lead will be back to zero once the next round begins as scores are reset each round. Still, with a bronze for 10-meter synchronized diving this year, and a bronze from the 10-meter platform in London, he has a great shot to medal. Daley is one of a couple dozen LGBTI athletes who have won a medal in th...

Olympics Update - Diving with China's 陈艾森 (Chen Aisen)

صورة
From: Speed o Rex  The diving events at the Olympics span a full two weeks, but who would complain about that?  China, showing its usual dominance, has taken two of three men's gold medals thus far.  Can they take the fourth and final one this weekend in the 10-meter platform?  Much of that depends on the performance of their superstar, Chen Aisen, who already has one gold medal to his credit.  Watch for him. Name 陈艾森 Chen Aisen Date of Birth October 22, 1995 (Libra) Hometown Guangzhou, China Height/Weight 5'6"/132 lbs Sport Diving --- 2016 Olympic gold medalist, 10-meter synchro --- 2015 World Championships gold medalist, 10-meter synchro

Unintentionally Censored Olympic Pics Make These Athletes Look Like Adult Film Stars

صورة
From: Queerty  Buzzfeed, we salute you. The intrepid editorial staff spent hours ogling and screen-grabbing footage of men’s Olympic diving competitions — and all to emphasize a highly pertinent point: Namely, that those scoreboard tickers at the bottom of the screen often make these athletes look, well, like adult film superstars.  Finally, a publication with the courage to say what the rest of us are thinking.  Okay, maybe it’s not particularly heavy-hitting. In fact, it might not even be a particularly astute observation. But it is another opportunity to scroll through enviable male physiques crammed (allegedly) into tiny Speedos. And sometimes, that’s enough.

The LGBT Athletes Who Have Won Medals In Rio (So Far)

Way to represent, Team LGBTI! From: NewNowNext  There are a record 49 athletes competing at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, and if those athletes were all on a team together, they’d be tied for 13th place in the overall medal count right now. Team LGBTI has managed to earn five medals despite more than a few anti-LGBT gaffes in NBC’s coverage, and that number is bound to grow as the second week of the Games kicks off with more track & field and team events. OutSports notes the number of out athletes is bound to grow as well, as it’s a perfect time for LGBT athletes from countries where homosexuality is illegal to advocate for LGBT rights while the world is watching. Last week, out diver Amini Fonua of Tonga, where homosexuality is illegal and punished by up to 10 years in prison, made a very large statement by condemning The Daily Beas t’s dangerous coverage that potentially outed some athletes, and discussing the repercussions some athletes may face when they return home as a res...
