June 04, 2017 From: Speed o Rex   Champions League It would be impossible to start a sports overview today without congratulating Real Madrid for their masterful win over a struggling Juventus in last night's Champions League European Cup final at the Principality Stadium, Cardiff, Wales. The astounding game inspired sportswriters to launch into a torrent of statistics, almost as many as baseball, only a few of which we will report in this space. Claudio Marchisio  While Juventus played well for much of the game, it was clear that toward the end they were phoning it in, resigned to the Real Madrid victory.  Many Juventus players are commended for their play, among them Claudio Marchisio , who was sent in to right a sinking ship, and Mario Mandžukić, who kicked their only goal.  Meanwhile, CR7 garnered two goals, the second being the unbelievable 600th goal of his professional career.  Midfielder Casemiro and sub Marco Asensio kicked Real Madrid's other two goals, in their mast...

More Than A Third Of LGBTI Athletes Won Medals In Rio

صورة
That's more than Team USA From: NewNowNext  35 percent of the record-breaking 53 out athletes competing in the 2016 Rio Olympics took home medals, either solo or in a group. This in comparison to leading Olympic contenders the United States, Great Britain and China, who saw roughly 20 percent of their athletes take home medals. If all the openly LGBTI athletes were consolidated onto one team, their five gold medals, six silver medals and three bronze medals would have placed them in 16th overall, ahead of countries like New Zealand, Canada and Kenya. Though the 2016 Games were not without their controversy, including journalists outing athletes and fans shouting homophobic chants at players, they also saw empowering coming out moments, joyful proclamations of same-sex love and plenty of proudly out athletes taking to the Olympic podiums. Here’s hoping the 2020 Games in Tokyo will be even gayer!   Gold Medals: Nicola Adams   Great Britain Boxing  51kg weight class   Kate Richardson-...

47% of out LGBT athletes won an Olympic medal in Rio

صورة
Of the 53 publicly out LGBT athletes, 25 of them won a medal including 10 gold. From: OutSports Britney Griner and Elena Della Donne won gold for Team USA women's basketball. Jeff Swinger-USA TODAY Sports Almost half of the publicly out LGBT athletes competing in the Rio Olympics won a medal, which is a drastically higher percentage than the athletes in general. All told, 25 of the 53 publicly out athletes, a full 47% -- won a medal, including 10 athletes winning gold. In 2012, about 40% of the publicly out LGBT athletes won medals, as Team LGBT did very well for itself at the Summer Olympics in London. This number is even higher, thanks in part to the success of the Swedish women's soccer team and the American women's basketball team, which combined account for almost a third of the athletes winning medals. It is odd that being publicly out would translate to Olympic success in two straight Summer Games. You have wonder if there is a correlation. Gold Medals Nicola Adams G...

USA women's basketball, with 4 out players, wins Olympic gold medal

صورة
It's the sixth gold medal in a row for the women. From: OutSports USA's Brittney Griner embraces Elena Delle Donne after the win.  Tom Pennington/Getty Images The U.S. women's basketball team continued its Olympics dominance, winning its sixth consecutive gold medal by crushing Spain, 101-72, in the final. The team has four openly gay, lesbian or bisexual players — Seimone Augustus , E lena Delle Donne , Brittney Griner and Angel McCoughtry . The U.S. was led in the gold medal game by 17 points each from Linday Whalen and Diana Taurasi. For Taurasi, it was her fourth Olympic gold. Della Donne had 10 points, McCoughtry eight, Augustus six and Griner four. Griner led the team with seven rebounds. We highlight the sexual orientation of these women because it puts a lie to the myth that being out will be a distraction and not allow athletes to perform at their best. It hasn't stopped these women. In a positive way, we're about the only site that focuses on their sexual...

Olympic Basketball Star Elena Delle Donne Comes Out, Announces Engagement To Girlfriend

صورة
"I decided I'm not at all going to hide anything." From: NewNowNext  As if playing in the Olympics wasn’t exciting enough, WNBA champ Elena Delle Donne has come out as gay in a Vogue magazine interview, announcing her engagement to girlfriend Amanda Clifton.  “It was just one of those articles where they came into my home, spent a couple days with me, and [fiancee] Amanda is a huge part of my life,” says Delle Donne, an MVP with the Chicago Sky. “So to leave her out wouldn’t have made any sense. It’s not a coming out article or anything. I’ve been with her for a very long time now, and people who are close to me know that, and that’s that.”  Delle Donne, now in Rio to play ball for Team USA, says for the most part her private life will remain private. “I don’t plan on having our relationship out in the public and all this media on it… Obviously there’s excitement right now because people see it for the first time.” The 26-year-old forward also appeared in ESPN’s Body I...

WNBA stars wonder when the 'stigma' awaiting an openly gay NBA player will end

صورة
From: Yahoo Sports Diana Taurasi and Sue Bird. The Team USA Women’s Basketball squad includes four players that have come out as gay, including most recent WNBA MVP and current Team USA Women’s Basketball medal hopeful Elena Delle Donne. Three of her teammates on that outfit – Brittney Griner, Angel McCoughtry and Seimone Augustus – are also out. Nary an eyebrow has been raised. The NBA, however, has no active players that have come out. Former Magic and Jazz center John Amaechi revealed his sexuality four years after playing his last NBA game, while longtime NBA stalwart Jason Collins came out via Sports Illustrated in 2013 prior to a 22-game turn with the Brooklyn Nets in 2013-14. Other than that? Silence. Save for a few rumors and innuendo working alongside the knowledge that NBA rosters have seen heaps of closeted gay players through the years. And that’s unfortunate. Even sadder? It’s understandable. WNBA players join us in thinking so, as Sam Amick’s USA Today feature points out...

Meet 9 LGBT Athletes At The Summer Olympics

صورة
They're going for the gold in Rio. From: NewNowNext  The International Olympics Committee’s record with LGBT athletes isn’t the best—while trans Olympians can now compete without undergoing gender-reassignment surgery, homophobic countries like Russia are chosen as Olympic hosts. But as we head toward the 2016 Summer Olympics, more and more gay, bi, trans and intersex Olympians are sharing their truth. And they’re finding that being out has improved their game. There were 23 out Olympians at the London Games, and over 40 are expected to compete in Rio. Below, we cheer on several who hope to bring home the gold.  1 Tom Daley  Diving Perhaps the most famous athlete heading to Rio, Daley came out in a YouTube video in 2013, a year after the London Games. “I’ve never been happier,” said Daley of his relationship with fiance Dustin Lance Black. “I’d never felt the feeling of love, it happened so quickly, I was completely overwhelmed by it.”  Daley made his Olympic debut at age 14 at th...
